slope stabilization

Originally designed in Europe for use in rockfalls and slope failures, Steel mesh has proven to be very effective when used to help contain landslides and unstable soil.  Marco Concrete Lifting has worked very closely with mesh manufacturers to introduce Magnum Helix Anchors as a viable anchor system for their products.  As a process, the wire mesh systems are cost effective when compared to traditional stabilization methods.  Ease of installation is one attribute that helps to lower labor costs.  The use of Magnum Helix Anchors to secure the mesh to the slope has not only decreased installation time but also given installers instant verification of anchor depth, installation torque and pull-out capacities—something that cannot be said of a typical soil nail anchor.

The use of a geotechnical engineer is necessary to properly assess the existing or potential problems that may be found within a particular slope.  Using an engineered design, Magnum Helix Anchors are installed according to specifications, then the mesh is laid over the area and secured with special load-bearing plates.  Magnum Anchors are available in a variety of configurations but even the Standard-Duty anchors have an ultimate load capacity of over 100 kips.  Although mesh may be mistaken for common chain link fence, this is by appearance only, it is actually highly engineered metal alloy mesh with a tensile strength of 280,000 psi and a coating guaranteed for over 100 years.

Traditionally,  Retaining Walls have been installed at the bottom of a potential slide to simply provide a path of resistance for moving soil, eventually compressing and stabilizing the soil.  The mesh systems, however, distribute soil pressure over the entire grid which minimizes the possibility of significant movement.  This design also allows vegetation to fully cover the area, making it impossible to detect any part of the retention system.

As seen the case studies below, mesh retention systems for slope stabilization can be used very effectively to retain unstable soil.
